Hymn:   Lord Jesus Christ

1
Lord Jesus Christ
you have come to us,
you are one with us,
Mary’s Son;
cleansing our souls from all their sin,
pouring your love and goodness in,
Jesus, our love for you we sing,
living Lord.

3
Lord Jesus Christ,
you have come to us,
born as one of us,
Mary’s Son.
Led out to die on Calvary,
risen from death to set us free,
living Lord Jesus, help us see
you are Lord.
2
Lord Jesus Christ,
now and ev’ry day
teach us how to pray,
Son of God.
You have commanded us to do
this in remembrance, Lord, of you.
Into our lives your pow’r breaks
   through,
living Lord.
4
Lord Jesus Christ,
I would come to you,
live my life for you,
Son of God.
All my commands I know are true,
your many gifts will make me new,
into my life your pow’r breaks
   through,
living Lord.

Welcome

Priest:   God is good
All:         all the time!
Priest:   All the time
All:         God is good!

Priest:   Today is a special day - it is Mothering Sunday - not Mother's Day - that is something quite different which some countries celebrate on the 2nd Sunday in May, but it has no particular religious significance. Mothering Sunday has its roots in the traditions of the Church, going back for hundreds of years.  Today Mothering Sunday is a popular day when Christians choose to use the occasion to think about all things which concern motherhood. We give thanks for the Church as Mother, the Virgin Mary as the mother of Jesus, we remember that God cares for us like a mother and last but not least we give thanks for our own mothers and all who ‘mother’ us.

And today is a good opportunity for us to pause and focus on the real, true, important values in our lives; right here, and in the whole world.

We are going to hear readings, sing some hymns, ask for God’s forgiveness and learn a bit about different aspects of caring.

Sing:            He’s got the whole world in his hand.
He’s got the whole world in his hand.
He’s got the whole world in his hand.
He’s got the whole world in his hand.

Reader 1:             Father, we are always running after things.  We want bigger, better things, listening too hard to the adverts of our consumer society.

All:               Protect us from this greed.  Help us to cling to the important things instead: compassion, love, hope and joy, the treasures of heaven.

Reader 2:   Father, help us to turn away from our lust for fame – when we secretly want people to recognise our achievements and congratulate us over them.

All:               Give us reassurance when we are doing the right thing, and the energy to work at spreading your fame instead of our own.  Help us to remember that all our works are gifts from you.

Sing:            He’s got you and me, brother, in his hand.
He’s got you and me, brother, in his hand.
He’s got you and me, brother, in his hand.
He’s got the whole world in his hand.

Reader 3:   Father, help us to turn away from our thirst for power – when we accidentally or deliberately manipulate others, beating them down with the stick of our power or ambitions.

All:               Forgive us when we use your Holy Book as an excuse to injure others or as a cover for our pride.

Reader 4:   Father, help us to conquer our desire for money.  Help us to see money in perspective, as a tool to help others instead of a weapon against the poor.

All:               Help us to remember that all things come from you, Lord and that in your eyes, everyone is equal.

Sing:            He’s got you and me, sister, in his hand.
He’s got you and me, sister, in his hand.
He’s got you and me, sister, in his hand.
He’s got the whole world in his hand.

Reader 5:   Father, we sometimes get obsessed by food – whether it be by eating too much, by dieting, or by worrying about what foods are safe to eat.

All:               Help us to eat joyfully, safely and without greed.  Help us also to do our part to help the hungry.

Reader 6:   Father, help us not to follow fashion blindly, but to appreciate the beauty and creativity of clothing as art whilst making sure that no one is hurt by fashion – either by being forced to buy expensive clothes by peer pressure, or by being forced to work in a clothing factory for a slave wage.

All:               Lord, you care for all of your creation; the birds of the air, the lilies of the field – help us not to worry but be assured of your love and care.

Sing:            He’s got the little tiny baby in his hand.
He’s got the little tiny baby in his hand.
He’s got the little tiny baby in his hand.
He’s got the whole world in his hand.

Reader 7:   Father, sometimes we can get hedonistic – just wanting the next ‘high’ whether it be from drink, drugs or religious experiences.

All:               Help us to enjoy the times of happiness you give us but not to pursue it by hurting other people or our own bodies.

Reader 8:   Father, help us to turn away from our misuse of beauty.  Help us not to view people as sex objects rather than human beings with feelings that can be hurt.  Help us not to judge people by their outward looks, but to look for everyone’s inner beauty.

All:               Thank you Lord that you love each and every one of us, just the way we are – just as you made us.  Help us to make the most of the gifts you gave us and to treasure your creation and each other.

Sing:            He’s got ev’rybody here in his hand.
He’s got ev’rybody here in his hand.
He’s got ev’rybody here in his hand.
He’s got the whole world in his hand.

Absolution

Priest:         May God, who gives us all life, and sent his only Son to die for us, forgive us when we are truly sorry.  Amen.

All:         And also with you.

Hymn:   Lord, we come to ask your healing
During this hymn, a collection will be taken.  If you would like information on how to gift-aid your donation, please see Peter Shrubsole after the service.  Information on setting up standing orders is also available from Peter.

1.
Lord, we come to ask your healing,
teach us of love;
all unspoken shame revealing,
teach us of love.
Take our selfish thoughts and actions,
petty feuds, divisive factions,
hear us now to you appealing,
teach us of love.

2
Sooth away of pain and sorrow,
hold us in love;
grace we cannot buy or borrow,
hold us in love.
Though we see but dark and danger,
though we spurn both friend
   and  stranger,
though we often dread tomorrow,
hold us in love.

3
When the  bread is raised
   and broken,
fill us with love;
words of consecrations spoken,
fill us with love.
As our grateful prayers continue,
make the faith that we have in you
more than just an empty token,
fill us with love.
4
Help us live for one another,
bind us in love;
stranger, neighbour, father, mother –
bind us in love.
All are equal at your table,
through your Spirit make us able
to embrace as sister, brother,
bind us in love.

Priest:                   Give thanks to the Lord for he is good;
All:         his faithfulness endures for ever.

Eucharistic prayer

Priest    The Lord is here.
All          His Spirit is with us.

                Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give him thanks and praise.

When we turned away you did not reject us,
but came to meet us in your Son.

You embraced us as your children
and welcomed us to sit and eat with you.

In Christ you shared our life
that we might live in him and he in us.

He opened his arms of love upon the cross
and made for all the perfect sacrifice for sin.

On the night that he was betrayed,
                at supper with his friends he took bread, and gave you thanks;
he broke it and gave it to them, saying:
                Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;
do this in remembrance of me.

Father, we do this in remembrance of him:
his body is the bread of life.

At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine,
he gave you thanks, and said:
Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant,
                which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins;
do this in remembrance of me.
Father, we do this in remembrance of him:
his blood is shed for all.

As we proclaim his death and celebrate his rising in glory,
send your Holy Spirit that this bread and this wine
may be to us the body and blood of your dear Son.

As we eat and drink these holy gifts
make us one in Christ, our risen Lord.

With your whole Church throughout the world
we offer you this sacrifice of praise
and lift our voice to join the eternal song of heaven:

                Holy, holy, holy Lord,
                God of power and might,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
                Hosanna in the highest.

Sit/Kneel

Priest:  Let us pray the prayer that Jesus taught us:

All:             Our Father in heaven
                    hallowed be your name,
                    your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
                    Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
                    Lead us not into temptation
                    but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,                 and the glory are yours
                    now and for ever.  Amen.

The priest invites people to come forward to receive communion or a blessing.

Priest    We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
All          Though we are many, we are one body,
because we all share in one bread.

Priest:   Draw near with faith.
Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ
                which he gave for you,
and his blood which he shed for you.
Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you,
and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

Adults who are baptized and children who’ve received preparation are welcome to receive communion. If you do not receive communion, please feel free to go forward for a blessing.

Hymn:   Sing we of the blessed Mother (remain seated)

1
Sing we of the blessèd Mother
who received the angel’s word,
and obedient to his summons
bore in love the infant Lord;
sing we of the joys of Mary
at whose breast that child was fed
who is Son of God eternal
and the everlasting Bread.

3

Sing again the joys of Mary
when she saw the risen Lord,
and, in prayer with Christ’s apostles,
waited on his promised word:
from on high the blazing glory
of the Spirit’s presence came,
heav’nly breath of God’s own being,
manifest through wind and flame.
2
Sing we, too, of Mary’s sorrows,
of the sword that pierced her
   through,
when beneath the cross of Jesus
she his weight of suff’ring knew,
looked upon her Son and Saviour
reigning high on Calv’ry’s tree,
saw the price of our redemption
paid to set the sinner free.

4
Sing the greatest joy of Mary
when on earth her work was done,
and the Lord of all creation
brought her to his heav’nly home:
virgin mother, Mary blessed,
   raised on high,
and crowned with grace,
may your Son, the world’s
   redeemer,
grant us all to see his face.

Prayer after communion

All:             Father of all, we give you thanks and praise,
that when we were still far off
you met us in your Son and brought us home.
Dying and living, he declared your love,
gave us grace, and opened the gates of glory.
                    May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life;
                    we who drink his cup bring life to others;
we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world.
Keep us firm in the hope that you have set before us,
so we and all your children shall be free,
                    and the whole earth live to praise your name;
                    through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Hymn:   Will you come and follow me?

1
Will you come and follow me
if I but call your name?
Will you go where you don’t know,
and never be the same?
Will you let my love be shown,
will you let my name be known,
will you let my life be grown
in you, and you in me?

4
Will you love the ‘you’ you hide
if I but call your name?
Will you quell the fear inside,
and never be the same?
Will you use the faith you’ve found
to reshape the world around
through my sight and touch
   and sound
in you, and you in me?

2
Will you leave yourself behind
if I but call your name?
Will you care for cruel and kind,
and never be the same?
Will you risk the hostile stare,
should your life attract or scare,
will you let me answer prayer
in you, and you in me?

5
Lord, your summons echo true
when you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you,
and never be the same.
In your company I’ll go
where your love and
   footsteps show.
Thus I’ll move and live and grow
in you, and you in me.
3
Will you let the blinded see
if I but call your name?
Will you set the pris’ners free,
and never be the same?
Will you kiss the leper clean
and do such as this unseen,
and admit to what I mean
in you, and you in me?
